Man robs credit union teller in Mission Valley

A man robbed a teller at a credit union late Friday afternoon in Mission Valley, San Diego police said.

The robbery occurred shortly after 5:20 p.m. at the Navy Federal Credit Union on Rio San Diego Drive in the Rio Vista Shopping Center off Qualcomm Way south of Friars Street, San Diego Police Officer Robert Heims said.

The robber demanded cash from a cash register and left with an undisclosed amount of money, Himes said. No one was injured.

NBC7 reported the robber apparently gave some of the cash, along with a tracking device from the credit union, to a man standing at a nearby intersection holding a sign asking for money. The station reported that police who followed the tracking device tracked it down to the remote operator, who told NBC the man gave him “a few hundred dollars.”

Police described the robber as a white man with tattoos, dark hair, unknown age, about 6 feet tall and weighing about 200 pounds. He was wearing a brown plaid shirt and dark jeans.

Robbery detectives from the San Diego Police Department are investigating and anyone with information about the robbery is asked to call the robbery unit at (619) 531-2299 or the San Diego County Crime Stoppers anonymous tip line at (888) 580-8477 .
