Man found dead, woman rescued in ocean by Border Field State Park

One person was killed and a second was rescued early Tuesday when the two tried to cross into the US from Mexico by swimming across a border fence, authorities said.

A woman was reportedly clinging to the border fence that stretches across the ocean in Border Field State Park when she was rescued by Tijuana lifeguards around 8 a.m., said San Diego Fire Department spokesman Jose Isea. She was flown to the US side of the border to be rescued by lifeguards. He refused further treatment and was handed over to the Border Patrol agents.

The woman told rescuers she was traveling with a male partner, but lifeguards did not see a second person in the water, Ysea said.

About half an hour after the initial call, a man’s body was found by Imperial Beach lifeguards about 200 to 300 feet north of the border fence. The forensic service was called to the scene, he said.

The ages of the man and woman found were not known, Ysea said.
