Man arrested on suspicion of DUI after hitting pedestrian, driving into water in Oceanside

A 55-year-old man allegedly a drunk driver was arrested on Tuesday after dragging his pickup from a coastal road into the ocean, hitting a pedestrian and driving into the water, police said.

It was just before 10 a.m. when the driver drove his truck from South The Strand, just south of Tyson Street Park, sped up and hit a pedestrian before passing over boulders along the road. The truck came to a standstill in the ocean where waves erupted, said police spokeswoman Jennifer Atenza.

A 68-year-old man was hit by the truck. Atenza said she did not know if the man was walking on the street or on the beach when he was hit. He was non-life-threateningly injured and taken to hospital.

The driver was arrested and held in Vista Jail on $ 100,000 bail, according to county jail records. A passenger in the truck was released, Atenza said.

A section of the road was closed for about two hours as police cleared the spot.
