Man accused of shining laser at sheriff’s helicopter flying over San Marcos 22 times

A 28-year-old man was arrested in the early hours of Monday on suspicion of throwing a laser at a sheriff’s helicopter 22 times as he flew over San Marcos, officials said.
The sheriff’s helicopter was assisting lawmakers in a chase – and was flying in the area for more than an hour – when someone started flashing a green laser on it, said Sheriff Lieutenant Ryan Wisniewski.
The pilot reported the first laser flash around 1:42 a.m., said Lt. Sheriff David Collins. In all, the crew reported that the aircraft was hit by 22 laser strikes.
Lasers are dangerous because pilots may be blinded for a while or possibly have permanent eye damage.
Deputies on the ground watched the laser at a home on Smiliax Street near State Route 78 in San Marcos and arrested a man at his home around 2 a.m., officials said.
Wisniewski said he did not know if a laser had been recovered. He said the pilot did not report any injuries.
According to prison records, the man was being held in Vista Prison on $ 25,000 bail.
