Man, 22, dies after he was found unresponsive in San Diego jail cell

A 22-year-old man died in his cell at San Diego Central Prison after being found indifferent on Wednesday morning, the Sheriff’s Department announced.

Orange County resident William Schuck died six days after his arrest in a car crash in Ocean Beach, Lt. Joel Stranger said in a press release Thursday.

Schuck was driving one of the cars involved in the March 10 accident, Stranger said.

San Diego police arrested him on suspicion of several counts, including driving under the influence of drugs, carrying a firearm and possessing a firearm without a serial number.

Before entering prison, Schuck was taken to a hospital for examination. He had no obvious signs of injury and refused further medical evaluation, Stranger said.

At around 9:40 a.m. Wednesday, law enforcement officials found him unresponsive. They started carrying out rescue measures until the paramedics arrived and took over, but Schuck died in prison.

Stranger said Schuck was alone in the cell. He showed no signs of injury, and there is no suspicion of a bad game. The autopsy was scheduled for Thursday.

Schuck is at least the fourth person to die in custody this year.

Last year, a record 18 inmates in San Diego County died in custody, a record. In the last 15 years, 185 inmates have died in local prisons.
