It has been almost two years since police discovered the horrific circumstances surrounding the disappearance of 2-year-old Thaddeus Sran.
On Monday, Briseida Sran’s mother also pleaded guilty to the death of her daughter years earlier.
Cameras were not allowed inside the courtroom, but Briseida is described as showing no emotion as she filed an appeal on five charges, including murder.
He is expected to be sentenced to almost 29 years in prison. Sukhjinder Sran’s husband has pleaded guilty to one count of murder and is expected to stay behind bars for 11 years.
The infant who caught the attention of members of the Madera community was unknown to most when they first saw his photo in July 2020.
His parents had declared the disappearance of the 2-year-old with special needs.
They assumed he had been abducted from the window near his crib.
For days, complete strangers handed out leaflets, hung posters and searched for Thaddeus.
But it did not take long for Madera police to find the burnt body of the boy in a nearby orchard. His parents were arrested for his murder.
Additional charges were soon brought against Briseida for the death of Devina’s four-month-old daughter in 2015.
Prosecutor Sally Moreno says it took a lot of negotiation to reach an agreement with the couple.
“It was very important for us to take responsibility, not only for the murder of Thaddeus, but also for the murder of Devina earlier,” Moreno said.
Briseida pleaded guilty to two counts of murder, one count of mutilation and two counts of child abuse in the death of her son and daughter. She is expected to be sentenced to 28 years and 8 months in prison. Sukhjinder’s husband pleaded guilty to 1 count of Thaddeus’s murder. He is expected to spend 11 years behind bars.
It is a case that felt personal throughout the city.
Victoria Castaneda and her friends never met Thaddeus, but they were searching for him when he was first reported missing.
And as soon as they learned what happened to the little boy, they planned a vigil in his honor.
Months later, the team participated in an effort to dedicate a playground for children with disabilities to Thaddeus in Centennial Park.
“You are supposed to love them. You are supposed to take care of them. You are supposed to protect them. And it is clear that Thaddeus never had that in his life. So, we came there. And we wanted to be the mom he never had,” he said. Castaneda.
The couple is expected to be sentenced on July 29 at 10 am at the Mantera Supreme Court.
