Los Angeles was voted the most expensive, inconvenient city in North America. Congrats?

Remember when Los Angeles felt like a relatively accessible secret? Before the New Yorkers bring their boiling hot bagel discourse here and their brothers do something Silicon Beach? Obviously, this version of LA also feels like a distant memory for most of you.

LA has just been voted the most expensive city in North America, second only to Tel Aviv in the world. This is according to this year’s annual Waiting index, in which we surveyed 27,000 residents of cities around the world about the current state of their hometowns. Among respondents in Los Angeles, a staggering 87 percent agree that the city is expensive. And really, can you blame them? As much as we like to trumpet for the wealth of our city of dollars tacos and free museumsit’s hard to call Los Angeles affordable with average housing prices approaching $ 800,000 and a gallon of gas hovering around $ 4.40.

Perhaps, if these high costs provide Angelenos with perfectly paved roads without traffic; clean, shady sidewalks; and timely, efficient transit networks, accessibility failures would not bite so much. But instead, LA also won the dubious award for the continent’s most inconvenient city, an opinion shared by a third of LA’s respondents (only Istanbul performed worse). With all this in mind, you probably won’t be surprised to hear that LA is also voted the most overrated city in North America (just behind Bangkok worldwide).

While we will certainly acknowledge these first two infamous mentions, we think they are too many amazing things about LA to keep this “overrated” distinction. In fact, there were a lot of positive results from the waiting index as well, enough to secure a place for LA as 11th best city in the world: The majority of respondents consider LA to be diverse (the third tallest in the world) and also stands on the podium as the second most creative city on Earth. Coincidentally, we think this is especially true after this past year and a half, when entire city blocks turned into art installations, festive mood went to the passage mutual aid networks sprouted on the sidewalks and it was as if every parking lot had become driving in.
