Long Beach Poly’s Lauren Reed happy to be going back to state track and field meet – Press Telegram

MOORPARK – Lauren Reed, a senior at Long Beach Poly, is a versatile and experienced athletic athlete.

Reed competed well in the CIF Southern Section Masters Meet at Moorpark High School on Saturday and qualified for the CIF State Track and Field Meet in three events: long jump, triple jump and 4 × 100 relay.

What’s weird about Reed is that she’s one of the few local athletes to be at the state meet, because the event hasn’t been held since its first year in 2019 due to the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and 2021.

“It feels great because we haven’t been since I was a freshman,” Reed said. “So qualifying for all the events I’m doing this year is really great.”

As a freshman, Reed ran in Poly’s 4 × 100 relay at the state event in 2019. She remembers being very nervous on the Jackrabbits’ first leg.

As a senior, it’s still Poly’s first leg, but she’s a more mature runner and now counts as the team leader.

Reed has wise advice for the students on his team.

“Just knowing that at your best is going to make it great,” Reed said. “Just having that mindset of saying I can get out here and be able to get out here and jump better, jump farther, I can get out here and run faster, run harder. I can finish better.

“There are so many things you can fix that make all your events better, so (knowing that) I’m here for a reason and knowing you’ve done it all this way is enough to calm your nerves.”

Poly’s Jaelen Knox qualified for the state meet in the men’s 100, 200 and 4 × 400 relays.

Knox ran the 100 in 10.56 seconds, 21.13 in the 200 and ran the first leg in the 4 × 400 Jackrabbits relay, which finished third with a time of 3 minutes and 19 seconds.

Poly was the only team in the area in which all of its athletes who qualified to compete in the CIF-SS Masters Meet were in the top six for the CIF State event.
