Dozens of people gathered on Belmont Shore in Long Beach this week as the bells of Bay Shore Church rang for a peace-seeking vigil in Ukraine.
Russian forces invaded Ukraine more than a month ago. Attendees at the vigil at Bay Shore Church heard a series of speakers, led by Representative Alan Lowenthal of D-Long Beach.
Highlights of the evening included speeches by two Ukrainians now living here, Yevgeniya Pokhylko and Anna Lugo. Ivan Prokopenko, a Ukrainian student at Cal State Long Beach, also offered his perspective.
Attendees signed giant cards with messages of peace, which were then handed out to Ukrainian speakers.
Organizer Justin Rudd organized the vigil with the help of his nonprofit community action team.
