Live new updates: Biden calls Putin’s actions in Ukraine ‘genocide’ for first time

Volodymyr Zalansky, on Tuesday, revealed that Ukrainian politician Viktor Medvedchuk, a pro-Russian oligarch and close friend of Vladimir Putin, was arrested after fleeing house arrest during Russia’s invasion of the country.

“A special operation was carried out thanks to the SBU [state security service,]”The President of Ukraine said in a telegram post.

The post included a photograph of Medvedchuk sitting on a chair, wearing camouflage uniforms by the Ukrainian army, with his hands handcuffed.

“Well done! Details below. Glory to Ukraine!”, Zalansky said in the post.

The SBU, which published another photo of Medvedchuk in handcuffs, said in a statement:

“You can be a pro-Russian politician and work for the aggressive state for years. You may be hiding from justice lately. You can even wear Ukrainian military uniforms for camouflage… But will it help you evade punishment? Not at all! Climate is waiting for you. The same kind of traitors in Ukraine as you! “

Medvedchuk was arrested in a “quick and dangerous special multi-layer operation,” SBU chief Ivan Bakanov said in a statement, but details of how he escaped and where he was detained were not immediately clear.

A longtime personal friend of Putin who said the Russian president is the godfather of one of his children, Medvedchuk was arrested last year on charges of treason, including revealing military secrets to Moscow.

Member of the Ukrainian parliament, Medvedchuk was sanctioned by the US for his vicious pro-Russian influence in 2014, after Russia annexed the Crimean peninsula of Ukraine and provoked a proxy separatist war in the eastern Donbas region.

Medvedchuk’s pro-Russian TV channels were shut down by the Zalanski administration.
