Listeria Outbreak Linked to Deli Meats Spreads Across 12 States, Resulting in Two Deaths and Nearly 30 Hospitalizations
A listeria outbreak has been reported in 12 states, resulting in two deaths — including one in New Jersey — and hospitalizing nearly 30 people. The outbreak has been linked to sliced deli meats.
Listeria Deli Meat Brands
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the cases involve people consuming meats sliced at deli counters in grocery stores, delis, and other food shops. While turkey, liverwurst, and ham were the most commonly reported sliced meats involved, no specific recalls or brands have been identified.
Listeria can spread through cross-contamination on deli equipment, kitchen surfaces, foods, and human contact. The bacteria can survive cold temperatures, making it resilient in refrigerated environments.
States Reporting Listeria Outbreaks
Although these states have reported cases of listeria, the CDC warns that the number could be higher, as it can take weeks for cases to be reported:
- Georgia
- Illinois — one death
- Massachusetts
- Maryland
- Minnesota
- Missouri
- North Carolina
- New Jersey — one death
- New York
- Pennsylvania
- Virginia
- Wisconsin
High-Risk Groups
Listeria is especially harmful and considered high risk for pregnant individuals, those aged 65 years or older, and people with compromised immune systems. The CDC advises these high-risk groups to avoid consuming meats sliced at any deli counter unless reheated to an internal temperature of 165 degrees Fahrenheit or until steaming hot. It’s important to clean your refrigerator, containers, and surfaces that may have come into contact with sliced deli meats to prevent contamination.
Symptoms of Listeria Infection
Symptoms usually begin within the first two weeks of eating contaminated food but can appear as late as 10 weeks after consumption. Symptoms include:
- Fever
- Muscle aches
- Fatigue
- Headache
- Stiff neck
- Confusion
- Loss of balance
- Seizures
The CDC continues to monitor the situation and provide updates. If you experience any symptoms of listeria infection, it is crucial to contact your healthcare provider immediately.
