Following the tragic shooting at a school in Uwalde, Texas, United Superintendent of Los Angeles Alberto M. Carvalho announced expanded security procedures, communication protocols and investment in technology to improve safety and security on school campuses.

“From Columbine, Sandy Hook, Parkland and now in Uvalde, Texas, we are witnessing that easy access to weapons for everyone, including students, without any filter, means that any place in America can become a dangerous place, regardless “Whether it’s a movie theater, a grocery store, a temple, a church or a school,” Carvalho said.

“Thanks to the Board of Education, Los Angeles Unified has implemented a number of safety measures in our school communities. However, as part of the ongoing review of our practices and procedures, we must continue to evaluate and update safety protocols to keep our students, staff and families as safe as possible. “

Updated security protocols from Los Angeles Unified will include an assessment of access to ensure reduced entry points. The area is also exploring the use of mobile applications with GPS capabilities to enable effective first responders’ access to critical incidents.

The assessment of access will also include a study of safety corner signs in schools so that students, staff, families and first aid workers know where the safest area is in the event of an accident.

The region will also expand its cooperation with local first response entities to share critical information, starting with maps of schools for quick orientation of people who respond to specific crisis areas at school.

In the event of a critical incident, Los Angeles Unified Police Chief Leslie Ramirez will engage with other municipal structures to ensure a rapid exchange of information that will shorten response time.

Finally, the county evaluates and improves systems to provide enhanced mental health support, with a focus on prevention and early identification, including reporting on reduced student counselor ratios and employee sensitivity training.
