Fred Williams will be interim head coach
Los Angeles Sparks announced today that the organization has parted ways with general manager / head coach Derek Fisher, which takes effect immediately. Assistant coach Fred Williams will serve as interim head coach until the end of the 2022 season. Now the Sparks will begin a search for the next general manager.
“After an in-depth assessment of our team, Sparks and GM / head coach Derek Fisher agreed to split,” said managing partner Eric Holoman. “On behalf of our group of owners, I would like to thank Derek for his efforts and contribution to the Sparks franchise. We wish him to move forward. I have full confidence in Fred Williams to take on the role of interim head coach, with extensive experience leading WNBA teams. “
Fisher was hired as head coach on December 5, 2018 and appointed general manager on December 22, 2020. In three plus seasons, Fisher had a regular season record of 54-46. The team qualified for the postseason twice in his tenure, with a playoff record of 1-4. Currently Sparks are 5-7 and sitting at 8you place in the WNBA rankings.
“I want to thank the organization, property, staff, players and fans of LA Sparks for the opportunity they have given me over the last four years as part of this historic franchise,” said Fisher. “Their support has allowed me to develop both as a coach and as a front office manager and I am proud of what we have achieved.”
“Sparks and I mutually agreed to separate as I shifted my focus back to pursuing other opportunities and private endeavors,” Fisher added. “It was an amazing journey and I wish the entire LA Sparks organization every success.”
Interim head coach Fred Williams takes over with 30 years of experience in women’s basketball. Most recently, he was head coach of Tulsa Shock / Dallas Wings from 2014-2018, where he coached Sparks Center Liz Cambridge. Williams was also the head coach of Atlanta Dream (2012-2013), Utah Stars (1999-2001) and the University of Southern California (1995-1997). In 2013, he led Dream to the WNBA Finals.
“I appreciate the opportunity to lead the team in these circumstances, along with assistant coaches Latrisha Tramel and Seimone Augustus,” said Williams. “We have a talented group of players focused on running for the WNBA playoffs, and together we will take on this challenge.”
Sparks’ next game is Saturday, June 11 against Las Vegas Aces at 18:00 PT at Crypto.com Arena.
