Los Angeles (KABC)-A new study highlights the disproportionate harm experienced by fast-food workers throughout Los Angeles County during a pandemic, and many lack access to the equipment needed to stay safe. It shows that.

UCLA Labor Center Between June and October 2021, we surveyed more than 400 fast food workers in LA County. One in four workers in LA County was infected with the virus, and employers rarely or occasionally notified workers about COVID-19 exposure at work.

“This can no longer be normalized,” said Manuel Villanueva, Director of the Western Region. In LA, most fast food workers are female and of color (mainly Latino Americans), and taking sick leave is not feasible for many of these workers.

Studies showMost employers provided workers with masks and gloves, but about half of the workers reported that this was not enough, or that gear was “rarely provided.”

“I’ve heard a lot of stories of some sort of terrible violation of workplace exposure, and then the manager has completely denied it,” he said. UCLA Labor Center.. “Less than half actually took the sick leave they needed, during which time their sick leave benefits actually increased.”

Mr. Villanueva said ROC United is conducting outreach missions to help workers and businesses better understand safety guidelines.

“Others told us that we had to give out two masks a week and buy the rest for about $ 1,” Villanueva said. “We provide them with a simple, multilingual, specific website that is like a guide on what they should have and what to look for.”

Among other recommendations, the report calls for implementing the protocol and protecting employees from retaliation.

“There is a big wave of violence between customers and restaurant workers, and I can’t fully emphasize this. We need to be kind to each other,” Villanueva said. “Restaurant workers only want to feed you, support your family and keep them safe, so be kind to each other.”
