RIVERSIDE – Playing the men’s volleyball title in the Southern Section of CIF at home was a good motivation for Jared Schnake.
A 6-foot-3 junior outside hitter dominated the net as King defeated Westminster’s La Quinta 25-14, 25-11, 24-26, 25-19 to win a Division 5 championship match. ..
“I knew I had to do my best, I knew I had to play hard, and whatever happens, it would happen.” “We are very happy to win.”
Schnake led all players with 19 kills and 3 service ace as King (17-0-0 overall) won the first CIF-SS Men’s Volleyball title.
“It’s all a dream. It’s unrealistic to win the league and win the CIF,” Schnake said.
King was sharp from the first serve, and Ian Swanson had a kill that won the game in the first game of Wolves.
Jaden Evangelista scored 4 kills and 1 block, Jacob Surrette added 3 kills, and King took advantage of net height to escape in Game 2.
La Quinta (12-1) showed his fortune to win Game 3 with 3 kills from outside hitter Brendan Nguyen and 18 errors from King.
“They were a great defensive team and a very sloppy team,” said King coach Corey Kleven. “They had a lot of hearts in the third set, but I think they were able to beat them.”
Brecken Roberts, Schnake, and Surette made a hit in Game 4, but without more than 14 errors, they might have missed the win. King led 19-11 and 23-13, but La Quinta missed six consecutive points. The 24-to-19 side-out eventually returned the ball to the Wolves.
“We tried to play a little faster and take advantage of our quickness, but they did a good block and we are a good team,” said David Tran, coach of La Quinta. “Honestly, I don’t know how to beat their height quickly.”
Julian Cleary scored a match point on a loop serve that La Quinta awkwardly returned to the net, but Sallet packed it into hardwood and his teammates began celebrating.
“This is huge because it was interrupted by COVID last year,” Kleven said. “We know we have a good group and we have a chance to do it this year, which is a big deal.”
