As you probably know, this year’s Fourth of July celebrations were tinged with political controversy.
As a pair of mass shootings grabbed headlines, Americans continued to debate the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, the 1973 landmark case that had protected reproductive rights for nearly 50 years.
Ever since the decision became official last month, countless celebrities have spoken out against it.
Many voiced their objections on Monday, reminding fans that the Independence Day celebration is cruelly ironic in a year when so many Americans have been disenfranchised.
Among the stars who spoke out against the SCOTUS ruling were Kim Kardashian and Kris Jenner, who both shared the following message on Instagram Stories:
“The 4th of July has been canceled due to lack of independence. Best regards ladies.”
Kim’s defiant message was shared by hundreds of thousands, including a host of prominent influencers and media figures.
But some fans took issue with remarks favoring Kim’s choice, with many accusing the billionaire businesswoman of hypocrisy.
Some pointed out that Kim and her sister continued to offer Fourth of July discounts on their various brands, despite announcing that the holiday was “cancelled” this year.
Others noted that Kim has endorsed Los Angeles mayoral candidate Rick Caruso.
Caruso is running as a Democrat, but spent most of his career as a Republican, and is vocally anti-choice.
“It’s so obvious to me that her post against the Roe v Wade overturn is a complete PR move because she supports pro-life candidates,” one Reddit user wrote in response to Kim’s Roe post.
“He doesn’t care about women’s rights, he just wants you to think he does.”
Others agreed, with one user theorizing that Kim is secretly a Republican.
“This is the same woman who just endorsed a pro-life candidate,” this person noted.
While it seems unlikely that Kim would bother to lie about his party affiliation, his beliefs are probably a bit on the right side of most celebrities.
After all, until very recently, the mother of four was married to an evangelical Trump supporter.
We’re not saying she agrees with all of Kanye’s right-wing views, but they certainly didn’t seem like a deal breaker for her.
Kim is coy about her political views, but many who have followed her closely over the years believe she occasionally “lets the mask slip,” so to speak, revealing that she has surprisingly conservative views.
For example, when Kim recently complained that Americans “don’t want to work anymore,” he sounded suspiciously like a Republican lawmaker who wants to take the ax to the social safety net.
Kim apologized for the remarks, but it’s important to keep in mind that she’s a PR master.
So it’s not surprising that so many people believe Kim and his family are criticizing the Supreme Court just because it’s popular at the moment.
If we had to guess, we’d say Kim is sincere in her remarks.
But that’s the problem with changing views to match the general consensus:
Even if you are sincere, there are those who doubt the strength of your convictions.
