Kern Medical workers, Hospital Authority reach tentative deal to avoid strike

KERN COUNTY, Calif. (KERO) — Healthcare workers at Kern Medical and the Kern County Hospital Authority reached a tentative agreement over the weekend, SEIU Local 521 said.

The agreement avoids the three-day strike that was scheduled to begin on August 8.

The union representing the health care workers says the deal includes significant pay increases and will expire in June 2025.

The union says the agreement also attempts to address some of the root causes of labor challenges affecting Kern Medical.

“It’s no secret that Kern Medical has experienced chronic staffing shortages, and it has been difficult to retain staff,” MRI technologist and SEIU 521 Bargaining Group member Eva Dominguez said in a statement.

“Health workers would come here, gain valuable experience, and go to neighboring hospitals. With this new agreement, we believe we have a better chance of retaining the experienced healthcare workers who live and raise their families here in Kern County.

“Our struggle has always been to make Kern Medical compete for the best staff and provide the best care to all Kern residents.”

The agreement will include automatic raises for all contract employees, a one-time bonus for full-time and part-time employees, and additional pay steps for Registered Nurses, Nurse Practitioners, Physician Assistants and others.

The agreement still needs to be ratified by hospital staff and approved by the Kern County Hospital Authority Board of Governors. The vote to ratify the contract is set for health workers on Tuesday, July 26, and will end on Thursday, July 28.
