Kaiser Permanente nurses strike and rally in LA over patient care concerns – Press Telegram

LOS ANGELES – Syndicated nurses at Kaiser Permanente Los Angeles Medical Center are taking part in a 24-hour strike on Thursday as they continue to negotiate a new employment contract. Nurses are scheduled to picket from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and a rally is scheduled for noon at Los Angeles Medical Center.

In anticipation of the strike, representatives of Kaiser Permanente Los Angeles Medical Center released a statement, calling it the unfortunate move by the union to choose to try to disrupt patient care and service as a bargaining tactic, especially during a pandemic.

“The COVID-19 pandemic has been an incredibly challenging and stressful time to work in the forefront of healthcare. We are very grateful to our Kaiser Permanente health care staff, whose commitment to care in the last two and a half years has been nothing. less than inspiring, “the statement said.

The California / National Nurses United Nurses Association, the union representing Kaiser nurses, says the strike is to address concerns about patient care and safe staffing areas that have suffered during the pandemic.

“In the last four months, we’ve seen 50 nurses leave our hospital because of poor working conditions that endanger patient care,” said Tinny Lawyer, a 26-year-old registered nurse with 20 years of experience at Los Angeles Medical Center. he said in a statement. “I have spent two decades in this hospital caring for this community. It hurts to see experienced nurses leave our hospital.

“When they walk out the door they take knowledge and experience that is critical to caring for our patients. Nurses leave because they work 12-hour shifts without a break. They look for supplies and they just aren’t there. Kaiser made $ 8.1 billion last year , have enough money to make sure we have syringes when we need them, support staff to help care for our patients and relief nurses to provide food breaks for nurses.

Kaiser Permanente representatives said they want to reassure members and patients that their care is a priority, even during the one-day strike planned by the nurses.

“As such, we have contingency plans in place to ensure that members and patients will continue to receive uninterrupted delivery and access to high-quality health care during this one-day strike. These plans include filling the planned nursing vacancies with staff. “We do not expect this event to affect the procedures and services already scheduled,” according to a statement.
