The appointment of Herb Wesson as a temporary member of the Council of Tenyou The area of the Council was stopped today by the judge of the Supreme Court of Los Angeles Mary Strobel, who today issued a temporary restraining order blocking the action.

City council unanimously approved a proposal Tuesday by council chairman Nuri Martinez for Wesson to fill the vacancy after council member Mark Ridley-Thomas was removed. Stroebel’s order does not allow this action to take place at least until a preliminary hearing is heard on March 17.

The Conference of Southern Christian Leaders in Southern California filed a lawsuit on February 18, challenging the appointment and removal of Ridley-Thomas. Stroebel confirmed the suspension, but said the plaintiffs could probably prevail in claiming that Wesson was “excluded” and could not legally take the seat of the city council, as he had already represented the district for three terms.

According to the assignment, Wesson should take the position
until December 31, unless Ridley-Thomas is acquitted or charged
drop out.

“With over 30 years of civil service, representing the residents of
Soviet District 10, there is currently no better choice than the former Soviet
member Herb Wesson, “said Council President Nuri Martinez after announcing his proposal to appoint Wesson last week.
