Johnny Depp trial live updates: Amber Heard cross-examined about fights

FALLS CHURCH, Va. Johnny Depp’s lawyers on Tuesday challenged the truth of Amber Heard’s accusation that Depp sexually assaulted her with a bottle of drink.

Herd was questioned for most of the day after she filed a defamation lawsuit against Depp.

Depp is suing Herd in the Fairfax County, Virginia District Court for a December 2018 article in the Washington Post, describing herself as a “public figure representing domestic abuse.” His lawyers say he was discredited by the article, although he never mentioned his name. The trial is now in its fifth week.

Depp’s lawyer, Camille Vasquez, asked Heard about various incidents in which she says she was attacked by Depp.

The controversy was especially intense for a fight in March 2015 that the couple had in Australia, shortly after their wedding, while Depp was shooting the fifth film of the franchise “Pirates of the Caribbean”.

It was during this altercation that Heard said he was sexually assaulted. Depp, on the other hand, says he was the victim and that he lost the tip of his middle finger when Herd threw him a bottle of vodka.

Vasquez wondered why Heard never sought medical help, even though she said her legs were cut from broken glass and she was bleeding after the attack.

“You’s the one who attacked someone with a bottle in Australia, aren’t you, Mrs Herd?” Vasquez asked.

“I did not attack Johnny in Australia. I never attacked Johnny,” Heard replied.

Vasquez then wondered why Heard wrote a series of love notes to Depp in the months after he said he was attacked.

Heard said she believed Depp had bottomed out after the race in Australia and was committed to sobriety. He said most of the attacks took place while Depp was under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

“When things were good, they were very good,” he said.

The jury also saw a recording of a testimony given by Heard in 2016 in connection with her divorce, in which she seemed to inadvertently admit that she had informed the celebrity news agency TMZ about aspects of her initial divorce proceedings.

Herd told jurors he was surprised when the paparazzi appeared in court seeking a temporary restraining order and tried to avoid publicity as much as possible.

During the 2016 filing, however, Herd put her hands to her lips as if something had accidentally erupted after saying that she wanted Depp to find out about the divorce filing “from a source other than TMZ, who was notified. .. “

“You slipped up there, didn’t you, Mrs. Herd?” Vasquez asked.

“I’m not talking about that,” Herd replied.

During the redirection examination, Herd said: their paparazzi and from TMZ. “

Herd’s re-investigation lasted only a few minutes, as Depp’s lawyers objected to almost every question Herd’s lawyer, Ellen Bredehoft, was trying to ask.

There was also evidence of Herd’s $ 100 million counterclaim against Depp. He says he was slandered by Depp’s lawyer, Adam Waldman, when he described Herd’s allegations as farce.

Heard said the allegations hurt her career, but Vasquez pointed to a series of negative articles about Heard that preceded Waldman’s comments.

The jury also heard a recording of a verbal altercation between the two, in which each underestimated the other’s acting career. Herd laughed mockingly at the role of Depp who made a career out of the ’80s TV show “21 Jump Street.”

“Hi, at least I didn’t go down without explaining myself first,” said Herd.

Depp responded with derogatory remarks about Herd’s biggest film role to date, shouting “Aquaman!” in a mocking way to underestimate the movie with superheroes.

And Heard was offended when Vasquez suggested that Heard get the role in “Aquaman” only with the help of Depp.

“Excuse me?” said Heard. “No, Mrs. Vasketh, I auditioned for this role.”
