After twice refusing to travel, the San Jose man relented Thursday and appeared in court on a number of felony charges stemming from a South Bay-wide rampage in early June that killed three and injured seven others.

Kevin Palkourana, wearing a prison-issued yellow shirt, was arraigned at the Santa Clara County Judiciary, but deviated from a week-long detention in which he did not want to leave the Santa Clara County Jail. Throughout the brief hearing he stood quietly in the doorway just outside the courtroom, barely visible to anyone in the galleries.

Parkourana’s public defender declined to read the indictment formally. Parkourana, 31, was ordered to return to court on Sept. 1 to present her case. Meanwhile, he remains detained in a high-security part of the prison without bail.

Parco Lana’s Thursday Appearance reopened the early stages of a prosecution that had stalled while stubbornly refused to leave prison. The reasons for his last two no-shows have not been publicly broadcast.

Palkowurana faces 13 felony counts in the June 1 rampage, including three counts of murder, seven counts of attempted murder, two counts of carjacking and one count of assault with a deadly weapon. If convicted on all charges, he could face life in prison.

Court records detailing Palkowurana’s past criminal arrests outline a history of mental health restraints and felonies, including bomb-making and threatening men with daggers. It is recorded that he was on probation. Parkourana was also arrested in San Jose in January for a hate crime attack against her transgender roommate, but was not charged.

Santa Clara County District Attorney Jeff Rosen previously said there was nothing in Mr. Palcowurana’s recent past that would allow prosecutors to keep him in custody after his arrest in January.

Officials said the violence began near Coosar Road and Delwood Way around 3pm.Not far from Parcolana’s family home in San Jose, the defendant carjacked a tan Honda minivan and stabbed the male driver. He then went to a shopping plaza on Hillsdale Avenue where he stabbed another driver and carjacked him, eventually leaving in a burgundy Honda Pilot.

From there, Parkourana headed north to Union and Cartner streets, where he reportedly rear-ended a motorbike that had stopped at a red light, slamming the 67-year-old into the roadway. Police said the man then drove to the Campbell and Pruneyard shopping center and hit a woman pushing a shopping cart. He was then seen around 4 p.m. in downtown San Jose, where he allegedly rear-ended a motorist on 10th and East Santa Clara streets, got out of the vehicle and stabbed the driver.

About 10 minutes later, according to police and witnesses, Palkowurana drove to 16th Street and rammed Nguyen Pham, 72, and Phuc Pham, 71, dead and dead. It is said that one person survived. Parkourana reportedly hit an electric scooter rider on Alum Rock Avenue in San Jose on the same street.

His final destination was Milpitas, where he entered Smart & Final on Jacqueline Road and stabbed Jiwanjot Dhaliwal, a 26-year-old Milpitas resident, who later died in hospital, according to police.

Parkourana was arrested not far from his last location and was caught hiding behind a car on Arizona Boulevard about three hours into the rampage. Police recovered a knife from one of the stolen vehicles and matched it to a missing slot in a block of knives at his parents’ home.
