San Diego City Councilor Jen Campbell ratified this week by the influence San Diego & Imperial County Labor Councilbut did not receive a “friendly established” vote of approval from the local Democratic Party,
Campbell, a board-certified doctor, is seeking a second term on the board, but has been criticized by activists in the Area 2 to support the redevelopment of the degraded Midway District and a compromise decree allowing for short-term holiday rentals.
Brigette Browning, executive secretary-treasurer of the council representing 136 local trade unions, said Campbell “always had the backs of workers” in a statement on February 28.
“In her first term, Dr. Jen protected workers from unfair redundancies during COVID, was a strong voice for fair pay for the city’s key workers, and always fought to ensure that local taxes created local jobs for San Diego, not for overseas workers. “, Said Browning.
But on the same day, the San Diego County Democratic Party withdrew a scheduled approval because there were not enough votes.
Competing Democratic candidate Lori SaldañaA former member of the State Assembly said the lack of approval from the local party showed “deep dissatisfaction” with Campbell.
“The decision to stop a vote confirmed what my volunteers and I often hear as we walk in District 2 and talk to residents: There is deep dissatisfaction with the current council member,” Saldaña said.
Another candidate, Joel Dayalso requested credit for blocking an approval.
Nevertheless, Campbell has garnered applause from some of California’s most prominent Democratic lawmakers, including Mayor Todd Gloria, lawmaker Scott Peters, and Senate President Tony Atkins.
Saldaña, a member of the local party’s central committee, said the withdrawal of the Campbell approval vote was the result of “weeks of coordination and organization between Democratic Club members, activists” and her campaign.
