Japan’s former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe reportedly shot during campaign speech, in heart failure

TOKYO, Japan — Former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has been shot dead while delivering a campaign speech in western Japan.

ABC News affiliate NHK reported that Abe was bleeding when he collapsed.

Abe’s heart is in “arrest status,” ABC News has learned, and there are no vital signs.

Two shots were heard. The former prime minister was shot in the back and was bleeding on the spot when he was taken to a hospital.

Authorities identified the suspect as Tetsuya Yamagami, 41, according to NHK, and he is in custody. A weapon, described as a shotgun, was found at the scene.

US Ambassador to Japan Rahm Emanuel he tweeted late Thursday night, “We are all saddened and shocked by the shooting of former Prime Minister Abe Shinzo.”

“Abe San has been an outstanding leader of Japan and a staunch ally of the US,” he said. “The US government and the American people pray for the well-being of Abe-san, his family and the people of Japan.”
