It’s time to help Tony Thurmond find another job – Press Telegram

As a candidate for the State Superintendent of Public Instruction in 2018, Tony Thurmond campaigned to restrict parental control over K-12 education decisions. So far, her administration has kept its promises to set aside mothers and fathers during some of the most critical years of their children’s lives. And he did so without improving a single academic level in his first term. Instead, public school children continue to suffer.

By almost every metric, California schools are failing our students. In fact, consider two stunning studies in recent months. One shows the classification of Californians 50º in literacy between states. Another proves that ours 8th graders are doing math at 5th grade level. These results should give a break to all voters who care about our children and their future.

Children have taken the brunt of their failed policies, how do you think you are entitled to another 4 years as the state’s top education official?

Allied with the California Teachers Association, Thurmond has prioritized and accelerated the union agenda to eliminate competition to the traditional public school model, however perverse the negative effects on children may be. Instead of facilitating innovation in education to produce smart, committed citizens prepared for the 21st century economy, it has doubled a social promotion conveyor belt that leads to mediocrity, poverty, and imprisonment.

Thurmond says he plans to set 3º primary reading scores for 2026. He has also proposed a parent advisory board, for which he has not yet organized. Serious parents see these empty promises as unacceptable delays and will find a way to do so before their children are left behind.

And while there are many faults, the person at the top of the educational infrastructure in California has not taken responsibility or shown leadership in the last 3 and a half years to straighten the boat. Throwing millions of dollars in taxes to problems is not leadership; it is ineptitude.

However, Thurmond will continue to send out numerous press releases boasting breathlessly of billions of tax dollars directed at schools to help his re-election nominee. Millions of minority families, who are among the least positioned to escape low-performing schools, will see very little of these resources after a parade of middlemen take their cut.

What you will not hear from Thurmond is his support for a number of pieces of legislation designed to dismantle charter schools since he took office. It’s a parade of horrible things like AB 1508 (2019), SB 98 (2020), AB 130 (2021), AB 167 (2021) and AB 1316 (2021).

You probably won’t mention it 4-year graduation rates are declining. There is no way for him to admit it preventing billions of federal dollars in pandemic relief from falling into the hands of parents who could use the funds as an educational savings account for tutorials, specialized curricula, or other materials that would otherwise come from parents ’already tight budgets.

California parents applaud the hundreds of thousands of incredible, passionate, and creative teachers who did their best during the pandemic despite the weight of improper mandates and meaningless restrictions. Good teachers are easy to distinguish from the unscrupulous unions that Thurmond continues to support.
