It’s easier to forgive when you are under chronic stress

Russian researchers have studied the relationship between human reality (self-sufficiency) and the power of forgiveness under different levels of stress. They found that people with severe depression preferred to be forgiven, while people with chronic problems were less likely to do so. The power of forgiveness promotes truth. The results of the study, published in the journal Clinical Biology and Special Educationcan be used in life training programs.

Truth — the power of “self-sufficiency” —will help people to cope with various trials of life. The power of forgiveness — to overcome the anger that has caused harm or difficult life — and to help maintain mental health. Despite the significance of these phenomena for the study of anthropology, their relationship has almost not been studied. The power of forgiveness is only now being investigated in Russian anthropology, while almost no paper has been published about its relationship with other positive traits.

HSE Faculty of Social Sciences Professor Sofya Nartova-Bochaver met with her colleague Violetta Park to study how stress affects honesty and the power of forgiveness. To establish the relationship, the researchers studied 140 young men and women aged 16 to 40 years.

Respondents belonged to different groups based on the concerns they faced. They include relatively affluent (students living in Moscow from a teacher training university), and association faced with daily stress due to daily liability (students at one of Moscow’s most traditional universities of the world), caused by the daily stress group caused by severe injury with unbearable results (patients of the repair center with severe spinal cord injury). Standard questionnaire questions were used in the study.

Studies have shown that people with chronic anxiety show higher levels of reality. Patients with moderate anxiety showed moderate results, while the regular stress group returned to the lowest levels. Such a situation works for the power of forgiveness.

Researchers have expressed a strong desire for forgiveness among representatives of the daily stress group through the impact of post-traumatic stress disorder. Although these people are facing a difficult situation in life — they depend on other people; Their mindset has changed over time, and many abilities have been lost — they are more likely to discover their true purpose in life and their most important values. They feel “like themselves” and are able to ignore many tragedies and imperfections in life through forgiveness in order to move forward.

The members of the “good relationship” group adapt easily to themselves and the world, have a high level of self-esteem and a willingness to forgive other people, themselves, and the circumstances in which life presents them. The lowest power of forgiveness and the lowest level of honesty were seen in the daily stress group. Perhaps because of ‘invisible’ and ‘unimportant’ everyday problems, these people are unaware of their daily worries until what they do about it reaches its peak. This is why people who believe that they are dealing with everyday pressure well in reality are tired and have become self-sufficient and so on.

The researchers also looked at how reality relates to the power of forgiveness in relation to stress levels. These issues are generally related to honesty: people who show compassion and forgiveness to others or a poor quality of life are more likely to feel the sincerity of their behavior; however, the strength of this joint varies depending on the stress.

In the chronic anxiety group, authenticity has almost nothing to do with the power of forgiveness; rather, it appears that they evolve in parallel. For those who feel comfortable and those who are under constant stress, self-forgiveness is the most important condition to face authenticity, but only in a group of everyday anxiety researchers have discovered the great importance of forgiving situations and life events . The best way to forgive oneself and the conditions of life is, with a great plan to forget about taking revenge or restoring justice, more honestly, more real life people live.

Scholars conclude that the ability to truly forgive contributes to a sense of authenticity, but at different levels of anxiety and stress a variety of factors can change.

Nartova-Bochaver says that “in a fast-paced, unpredictable environment, it is very important to have a variety of life skills and personality traits, of which the ability to forgive is definitely important.”
