Is Sean Penn in Ukraine? Actor continues work on documentary about Russia’s invasion

NEW YORK – Director and actor Sean Penn is in Ukraine to continue working on a documentary about the ongoing Russian attack.

The Office of the President of Ukraine wrote in a Facebook post on Thursday that Penn attended press conferences, met with Deputy Prime Minister Iryna Vereshchuk and spoke to journalists and military personnel about the Russian invasion.

“Sean Penn shows the courage that many others lack, especially Western politicians,” the president’s office wrote on Facebook. “The director came especially to Kiev to record all the events that are currently happening in Ukraine and to tell the world the truth about the Russian invasion of our country.”

He was also there in late November to work on the project, which is a production of VICE Studios. Photographs at the time showed him visiting the front lines of the Ukrainian Armed Forces near the Donetsk region.

The Oscar winner has been involved in numerous international humanitarian and anti-war efforts over the years and founded the non-profit CORE Disaster Relief Organization in response to the 2010 earthquake in Haiti, recorded in the documentary Citizen Penn.

A Penn spokesman did not immediately respond to a request for comment. VICE Studios had no direct comment.
