The incident began when police said they had received a call about a carjacked vehicle on February 14. The alleged carjacking occurred at 5700 Block Thornton Avenue in Newark. Police said the teenage victim dropped her child off at school when the suspect approached her with a knife. The suspect fled in a car.

On April 13, a license plate reading camera alerted Newark and Fremont police about the vehicle. Newark police found the vehicle at 4:11 p.m. at the Chase Suites Hotel (39150 Cedar Boulevard).

The vehicle was empty when police found it, but officers were watching as two men, including López Castaneda, entered the vehicle. Police implemented a “dangerous traffic stop” and instructed the men to raise their hands.

Following police orders, Lopez Castaneda got out of the car with his hands on his head. Officers noticed what looked like a gun on the suspect’s waistband, shouted “gun” and ordered him to the ground.

Lopez Castaneda’s waistband weapon later turned out to be a full metal replica of a Beretta M9 pistol. After the suspect was shot, the gun fell onto the car and slid to the ground.

Police treated Lopez Castaneda after he was shot, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. Another man in the car was not shot.
