The gin produced by a pair of Ardrosans part-time, along with their full-time work, is a toast to the city after receiving the prestigious award.
Inventor’s Gin, which is distilled in what is considered “Scotland’s smallest distillery”, won a silver medal at the London Spirit Awards in the category of “Best Gin”.
Competing with such giant companies as Gordon’s and Hendrick’s, it was the gin, distilled in the Ardrossan garage, that approached the top prize.
Gene was launched in 2019 by a couple of Stephen and Andrea Lockhart, and Andrea told Herald about the moment she heard they had won a silver medal.
She said, “Actually we got the award in the middle of the day, I sat at the table and said, ‘My God, we actually just won the award.’
“I couldn’t believe it, considering that we were there with spirits from all over the world – the States, Canada, Mauritius, Thailand …”
Gin was judged by a team of more than 50 judges who reviewed his taste, quality packaging and value for money.
Gin is not only distilled locally, but also uses ingredients from the area.
Andrea told us about how he uses two botanical remedies from the fields of Ardrosan and filtered through heather from the Fairly Moors and nettles from Kelburn.
She continued, “We don’t know anyone else who does what we do.
“Everyone else, even small producers, can do it according to their own recipe, but most of them go somewhere to a distillery and get a production site. While we do it all from home. ”
The gin is described as warm and spicy, using chili and pink peppers that are smoked using Stephen’s homemade smoker using a recycled whiskey barrel.
