Interstate 80 closed from Colfax to Truckee

(KTXL) — Due to multiple spinouts and whiteout conditions along Interstate 80 in the Sierra, closed and vehicles diverted, according to Caltrans District 3.

Eastbound drivers will turn at Colfax and westbound drivers will turn at Stateline. There are currently no plans to reopen.

The announcement comes about 30 minutes after Caltrans announced traffic was being held up at Kingvale and Truckee due to near-zero visibility and multiple spinouts near donor summits.

Images and video from Caltrans and the California Highway Patrol Truckee Office show how visibility is poor along the interstate due to heavy snow and blowing winds.

The Sugar Bowl Resort, located along the closed interstate, said Historic State Route 40 was closed and was working to reopen the road for tomorrow.

The Central Sierra Snow Lab at the University of California, Berkeley in Soda Springs reports that the wind blows and brings down 3 inches of snow per hour.
