Interim dean of research selected for national leadership initiative

Dr. Joy Goto, his temporary dean Department of Research and Postgraduate Studies at Fresno State, is one of the 22 Senior Higher Education Professionals selected to participate in 2022 Millennium Leadership Initiativea leadership development program American Association of State Colleges and Universities.

The program provides individuals who are traditionally underrepresented at the highest levels of post-secondary education with the opportunity to develop skills, gain a philosophical overview and build the network and knowledge needed to advance to a presidency.

Since its inception 23 years ago, 694 participants have graduated from the institute. One-fifth of graduates have become president or chancellor, and more than a third have advanced significantly to other leadership positions in higher education, including at the state level.

Goto was born and raised in Fresno. He joined the State of Fresno in 2007 and has taught and served as president of the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry for five years. She received her bachelor’s degree in chemistry from the University of California, Davis and her doctorate in chemistry from the University of California, Los Angeles. She was a postdoctoral fellow at the John Douglas French Foundation at Harvard Medical School and a researcher at the Beckman Institute in the City of Hope in Duarte, California.

Her research focuses on the use of fruit flies and human neuronal cultures to investigate neuronal function, oxidative stress, and protein-protein interaction using biochemical, electrophysiological, and kinetic behavioral methods. She has collaborated with students through the Goto lab and with other professors in her research.

Last year, Fresno State administrators Dr. Xuanning Fu, Interim Professor and Vice President for Academic Affairs, and Dr. Malisa Lee, Vice President for Record Management, was selected to participate in the leadership initiative.
