For the 25th anniversary of the tragedy, a new two-hour documentary, The Cult Next Door: The mystery and madness of Heaven’s Gateinvestigates never before seen imagery found in the investigation.

Detective Rick Scully, a former investigator for the San Diego Sheriff’s Department, searched the home, known as “the convent,” where the bodies were found and said, “We realized this was definitely a cult.”

At the San Diego home, police found 21 men and 18 women who died by suicide.

They were found wearing identical black clothing with Nike sneakers and lined up in bunk beds.

Each body had a severed head and was covered with a purple blanket. They also had $ 5.75 cash in their pockets and a suitcase next to them on the floor.

Heaven’s Gate cult was a religious group that mistakenly believed that they were destined to go to heaven on a UFO.

They had dropped an “alien abduction” insurance policy that would pay $ 1 million per person for up to 50 members if their deaths were caused by aliens, the Associated Press reported.

The suicides were achieved by drinking a deadly cocktail of phenobarbital mixed with apple sauce and vodka.

Phenobarbital is a medicine used by doctors to slow down the activity in your brain and nervous system and is generally used to treat people suffering from cramps, or as a sedative to help you relax.

Florida resident and 15-year-old Heaven’s Gate member Dick Joslyn told The Baltimore Sun: “Everyone did this of their own free will, even if they were in a sect.
