Inglewood’s winning streak continues with 2026 World Cup honors – Press Telegram

The world’s most popular sporting event will arrive in Los Angeles in 2026. Los Angeles has been selected as the city to host matches during the 2026 World Cup, FIFA announced on Thursday 16 June.

Translation, for the people of Inglewood: the World Cup, like the Super Bowl before it, is really coming to the “City of Champions”.

Los Angeles has been published in the FIFA list of the 16 host cities of North America for the international mammoth tournament. But the games will take place at Rams owner Stan Kroenke’s two-year-old SoFi Stadium in the heart of Inglewood at a price of $ 5.6 billion, the most expensive stadium ever built.

The announcement is just one more step toward Inglewood’s goal of making itself known as an “international city,” said Mayor James T. Butts Jr. during an interview on Thursday.

“It’s big business, but it’s another one of a series of big businesses that have happened in Inglewood,” Butts said.

Several other entertainment events are planned for next year in Inglewood, including Wrestlemania and the NCAA College Football Championship Game.

“But the FIFA World Cup we were looking forward to,” Butts said, “because it solidifies all the diversity of entertainment and people coming to the Inglewood area.”

Butts added, however, that Inglewood is still tied to Los Angeles in general, even with the latest FIFA announcement.

“There’s nothing wrong with announcing the Los Angeles area,” Butts said, “but it’s not in LA, it’s in Inglewood.”

Inglewood hoped, before holding the 2022 SuperBowl on SoFi, to develop more restaurants, bars and hotels. But the pandemic has put a halt to much of local development.

Butts, however, is confident that there will be at least four new hotels in the city by 2026, along with a “panoply of restaurants in the development of Hollywood Park.”

When the World Cup comes, “he said,” you won’t recognize Inglewood. “

Butts has also put an end to any concerns that the SoFi Stadium pitch may not currently meet FIFA’s regulatory size (it is currently too narrow for a regulatory “field”) for a World Cup match.

“There’s no way they’ll commit if SoFi couldn’t reconfigure the field at least for that event,” Butts said.

Along with Los Angeles, the cities in the United States that will host the matches during the 2026 World Cup are Seattle; San Francisco, Kansas City, Dallas, Houston, Atlanta, Boston, Philadelphia and Miami, as well as New York / New Jersey.

Mexico will host matches in Guadalajara, Mexico City and Monterey. Canada will host matches in Toronto and Vancouver.

The Rose Bowl in Pasadena, which hosted the 1994 World Cup match, was a finalist this time, but was eliminated in the final round.

Thursday’s decision, meanwhile, is just the latest title in the streak of many-year-old victories for the home of the Kia Forum, Hollywood Park, where the SoFi Stadium and YouTube Theater’s performance hall reside, as well as the new home under construction. of LA. NBA clippers and countless hotels, residences, restaurants, and retail projects underway.

Last October, the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra officially opened the doors of its Judith and Thomas L. Beckman YOLA Center, quickly nicknamed BYC. The complex is the first permanent space for musical practices and performances dedicated to the Los Angeles Youth Orchestra.

SoFi’s neighbor, the Kia Forum, was once feared to be too old a school when the Lakers and Kings picked it up and moved to the then Staples Center, now Crypto.com Arena. But Madison Square Garden Co. acquired the stadium in 2011 and soon announced plans for a $ 50 million facelift. The aging living room has been reborn, with new lighting, seating, video screens and acoustics.

Since then, the Forum has hosted mainly major musical events and traveling shows (as well as occasional sporting events, including boxing matches and mixed martial arts).

As the sports world watched, SoFi hosted Super Bowl LVI, won by local team Rams, 23-20, in February. Even fans who tuned in to television to watch the action of the Beijing Winter Olympics used to see SoFi as a backdrop for NBC sports analysts during the games.

Inglewood’s ongoing evolution will have advanced when the best of the beautiful game arrives in 2026.
