IndyCar driver Josef Newgarden crashes at race, briefly loses consciousness

IndyCar driver Josef Newgarden crashed in the Hy-Vee Salute to Farmers 300 on Sunday and later collapsed and was taken to the hospital.

According to Team Penske, Newgarden was initially treated on the track and released. But after the race, he collapsed and was taken to the hospital.

“After the race, Newgarden lost consciousness and collapsed, sustaining a cut on the back of his head,” Team Penske said late Sunday. “Due to the 45-minute drive to MercyOne Des Moines Medical Center and the traffic outside the racetrack, it was determined that a medical helicopter was the best mode of transport. After evaluation, all scans were negative. Newgarden will be taken overnight for observation.”

Newgarden had completed 235 laps in Sunday’s 300-lap race when he lost control and careered into the wall. He completed 148 laps before the leader fell.

Pato O’Ward took first place in Sunday’s race.

Newgarden has won four races in 2022 and is 3rd in the IndyCar standings.
