Indianapolis married couple among victims killed at Indiana mall

GREENWOOD, Indiana – Indian officials released Monday the names of three victims and the alleged gunman killed in a shooting at Greenwood Park Mall on Sunday.

The Johnson County and Marion County court offices said the victims were identified as Indianapolis Pedro Pineda, 56, and Rosa Mirian Rivera de Pineda, 37, and Victor Gomez, a 30-year-old married couple in Indianapolis, WRTV reported.

WRTV reported that the alleged shooter was 20-year-old Jonathan Douglas Sapirman of Greenwood.

At a news conference Monday, Greenwood police chief James Ison said Sapirman had spent about an hour before getting out of the bathroom and starting shooting.

Investigators said Sapirman spent time in the bathroom making a rifle he had brought in a backpack.

Sapirman fired 24 shots within two minutes, authorities said, according to the Associated Press.

No motive has been released, but relatives of the suspect told investigators that the housing complex he lived in had recently issued a release notice.

On Monday, Ison said Sapirman continued firing until 22-year-old Elisjsha Dick was shot dead.

Initially, authorities told WRTV that Dick was legally armed, but according to the Associated Press, it is forbidden to carry the weapon in his possession.

Two other people, a woman and a 12-year-old girl, were injured in the shooting, the news reported.

Police say the child suffered minor injuries and was taken to hospital, WRTV reported.

The woman was taken from the scene to the hospital, but her condition was not immediately known, the Ertzaintza reported.

An FBI spokesman confirmed to WRTV that his team had assisted local police in the investigation of the shooting and that they had subsequently issued a search warrant at Polo Run Apartments.

According to WRTV, the Johnson County bomb team was called to the mall after an abandoned backpack was placed in the mall. Police later said they cleaned the bag and that it was not a threat.

A spokesman representing Simon Property Group, the main company in Greenwood Park Mall, confirmed to WRTV that the center will be closed on Monday.

The reopening date will be announced later.

“We mourn the victims of yesterday’s horrific tragedy in Greenway,” a statement shared on behalf of the company said. “Violence has no place in this community or anywhere else. We appreciate the strong response to the first responses, including the heroic actions of the Good Samaritan that stopped the suspect.”
