Editor Andrea Guyton was shopping at the grocery store on Saturday afternoon when she saw the 28-year-old burglary suspect.
“I recognized him almost immediately because of the tattoo he had, the fact that it was covered in dirt and it was so weird that he came out.” said Gayton. “At first I was icy, I was saying, ‘Wait, is this the guy?’ And then as he got closer, I saw the tattoo and I was saying “God, this is it!”
Guyton says they were both in the store’s product department.
“We made eye contact for a while. He passed me, grabbed an apple, started eating it and went out the front door,” he says.
No one else seemed to have recognized the man who, for the past two days, had been at the center of a major 20-hour confrontation with the police and the closure of nearby businesses and schools.
So Guyton took action, alerting the store staff.
“After he left, I would say to you, ‘You guys, he was, like he was the guy.’ “And then I told the store clerk why he didn’t know who he was either, so I told him, ‘No, you have to call the police because he was the guy,'” he says.
Guyton says Save Mart employees were shocked because they thought the store was safe. Police said late Friday that Vang had probably escaped from the area.
Minutes after Guyton’s meeting with Vang, he was arrested by police as he tried to escape to a nearby apartment complex.
Officers later said that although they reopened the mall on Friday afternoon, they left undercover officers and units nearby.
Guess who’s feeling over the Savemart ceiling today? While we may have withdrawn our visible SWAT operation, we have left secret detectives in their place. When suspect Pheng Vang started running, MAGEC detectives and Northeast Patrol officers rushed to arrest him. pic.twitter.com/yodRDX4EBG

As for Guyton, she says it may take some time for her to recover from the meeting.
“I’m still a little scared because that was the closest I’ve ever been to a story,” he says.
