Hundreds get free prom dresses at ‘Belle of the Ball’ in Boston

Touching: Hundreds of girls receive free dance dresses at Belle of the Ball


About 650 high school students received a gifted dance gown Saturday at the “Belle of the Ball” event at Boston’s Hynes Convention Center. “Dance dresses, many of them brand new, are donated to junior and senior students in Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Rhode Island who probably could not afford them.” “I was actually very grateful I got it because I was worried about how I would get a dress for the dance,” said Darlene Rosario, a senior at Lawrence High School. “I was glad I was able to find the dress I wanted in my size.” “The dance is in a month, the time is approaching and we’re just trying to find a dress,” said Katy Ucles, a Lawrence colleague. “The dance is in a month, the time is approaching and we’re just trying to find a dress,” said Katy Ucles, a Lawrence High classmate. “I saw another girl wearing the same dress I liked, so I said, ‘No!’ But then I found the dress, so I’m happy.”

Saturday marked the 18th anniversary of Belle of the Ball Boutique Day, sponsored by Jordan’s Furniture, Anton’s Cleaners and Enterprise Bank.

“They’re taking a lesson, too. They’re not just given it,” said Eliot Tatelman, president of Jordan’s Furniture. “We ask them to bring it back because, next year, someone else could wear it, which is so nice.”

“You just realize this is an important part of their lives. I mean, I never knew it until my daughter went through it years ago,” said Arthur Anton, chief operating officer of Anton’s Cleaners.

All the girls who attended Saturday’s event put accessories on their dresses with free shoes and the personal stylists were among the 400 volunteers who were available to help. Then the girls had the opportunity to walk the catwalk wearing the newly discovered dance dresses.
