Hundreds attended the 4th Annual South Los Angeles Pride Celebration on July 1 at Norman O. Houston Park in Baldwin Hills. Hosted by Council Members Marqueece Harris-Dawson and Herb Wesson, this year’s family-friendly celebration was a Pride Picnic designed to bring together South Los Angeles’ LGBTQ community and their allies for a culturally appropriate celebration of Pride.
In addition to Harris-Dawson and Wesson, this year saw the most black elected officials at LA Pride. Those in attendance included Congresswoman Karen Bass, Supervisor Holly Mitchell, Senators Steve Bradford and Sydney Kamlager, and Assemblymembers Reggie Jones-Sawyer, Isaac Bryan, and Tina McKinner.
Journalist and advocate Jasmin Canik chairs the planning committee, which is made up of several community organizations. The 2022 South Los Angeles Community Pride Picnic was sponsored in part by the Community Coalition, Providence, FOX, AEG and the Los Angeles Department of Civil + Human Rights and Justice.
