Howard University received a $ 2 million donation to digitize a large collection of black newspaper archives in hopes of making them more widely available to researchers and the public.

The Black Press archive, dating back to the 1970s, contains more than 2,000 headlines in the United States and Africa and the Caribbean. Includes well-known American newspapers such as Chicago Defender and New York Amsterdam News, as well as French, hair and Swahili publications.

But most of the collection was inaccessible to the public, with only a small percentage of the material being microfilmed and physical copies fragile, said Benjamin Talton, director of the Howards Moorland-Spingarn Research Center, which houses the archives.

“Once digitized, Howard’s Black Press Archive will be the largest, most diverse and most accessible database for black newspapers in the world,” he said in an email.

The Howard Center for Journalism and Democracy, a historic black university in Washington, D.C., has helped receive a grant from the Jonathan Logan Family Foundation, which supports social justice causes in journalism and the arts.

It’s important to have access to black newspapers to get a better feel for the past, said Pulitzer Prize winner and New York Times journalist Nicole Hannah-Jones, who founded the Journalism Center to increase diversity in the industry.

“We will be able to go back and look at these archives and these newspapers and the way the black press covers the world and better understand who we are as a society, who we were then and who we are now,” she said. at the moment we really only get a very narrow part of the story and that is the part of the story told through power and through the ruling class.
