Man accused of using device to steal data from ATM users

BELMONT, Calif. (BCN) — A Seattle man has been arrested in Belmont on suspicion of tampering with an ATM in Belmont, Belmont Police said in a statement Friday.

A Bank of America technician discovered one of the ATMs had a skimming device and a camera nearby. According to the FBI, a skimming device is one of the pieces of technology attached to his ATMs that steal data such as a user’s girlfriend’s PIN.

Belmont Police monitored the ATM on December 31, 2022 and arrested Nicolae Diaconu, 29. He is also charged with resisting a peace officer.

Belmont police are continuing to investigate the crime and believe other suspects are involved.
