How to Clean the Vent Covers on Your Air Conditioner

There are a number of good reasons to keep your vent covers clean. Dust that accumulates on and around them is a potential source of contamination. As a result, dust and other allergens may wind up all over your house. People with allergies will be unable to breathe comfortably as a result of poor indoor air quality.

If your air vents are clogged with dust and debris, they may also affect the efficiency of your air conditioning system. You can end up paying more for your electricity as a result of that so air conditioning repair is needed. Because of the ongoing wear and tear, the system may fail sooner than expected if you don’t fix the problem right away As a result, you’ll have to pay for more repairs.

Fortunately, it is simple to stay away from them. To clean air vent covers, the technique is quite simple. Take heed of these instructions:

Determine Your Vent Covers’ Age and Condition

Determine the age of your vent covers as the first step. Depending on their age, the cleaning procedure may differ. Vent covers that are more than a decade old should be treated with greater care and attention than those that are only a few years old.

Prepare the Space

Turn off the system and the thermostat before beginning any work. Your home will not be infested with more dust because of this. In any case, a sheet or similar barrier should be used to protect the floor and any nearby furniture from dust that may fall from the ceiling (especially if you’re trying to learn how to clean ceiling vents).

Vacuum

Start by vacuuming the vent covers with the brush attachment once you’ve prepared the area, switched off the system, and put on the appropriate safety gear. Using a damp microfiber cloth, wipe off both the outside of the vent and the surrounding area of the wall or ceiling after you’ve removed all of the dust and dirt.

Even while cleaning the ceiling vents, you should expect some dust to fall. To clean it up, keep a broom handy.)

At this point, do not use any cleaning products. Stay with water if you can. Cleaning products can actually distribute the dust around, increasing the likelihood that it will enter your home or system.

These two simple treatments may be all that is needed to get your air and heat vent covers back to their original purity. There are additional processes that may be necessary when dealing with earlier covers, which are explained in the following paragraphs.

Get rid of the Vent Hoods

Using a screwdriver, remove the screws holding the vent cover in place from the wall or ceiling. You’ll need to keep this in mind when you’re done cleaning the vent cover.

Vent covers from older models may adhere to the wall. When this happens, resist the desire to yank on the cover. The cover or paint can be damaged if you use too much force. With a box cutter, you can cut around the vent’s edge to loosen it, taking care to avoid damaging it or the wall.

It’s possible you’ve noticed that your vent cover is also attached to the wall via clips. In some models, this is the case. The vent cover may normally be removed by pressing the top clip and pulling it out. However, make sure to read the manufacturer’s instructions first.

Disinfect the Vent Covers

Fill a bathtub halfway with hot water and dish soap after you’ve removed your vent covers carefully. If you don’t like the notion of rinsing dust and debris into your tub, you can take them outdoors and clean them in a bucket.

Soak the duvet covers in warm, soapy water for at least 30 minutes before removing them. This can help loosen filth buildup and make cleaning up a breeze. To remove the covers from the tubs or buckets, use a moist washcloth to wipe them down. Using a foam paintbrush is the best way to clean the slats.

Rust may have built up on certain older vent covers and will not come out with a simple rinse. To restore the cover’s finish, you may need to lightly sand down certain spots before reinstalling it. If this is your goal, consider using a rust-inhibiting spray paint.

Alternatively, use a hairdryer on the cool setting to fully dry the wall vent covers before reinstalling. Before replacing them, make sure all moisture has been removed. Before returning the coverings to the wall, allow them to dry completely.
