For families traveling this holiday season, it’s a good idea to consider adding a REAL ID upgrade to your checklist when planning your trip.

The California Department of Motor Vehicles is proposing to change your driver’s license or ID to a REAL ID. Because federal law requires you to board a local flight and enter a federal building using either your passport, REAL ID, or any other federal-approved ID card.

You don’t need to get a REAL ID, but your driver’s license makes it easy to board a local plane or visit a loved one at a military base.To assist in this change, the California DMV offers Free upgrade Those who have renewed their license or ID card between March 2020 and July 2021 from now until December 31, 2021.
