Throwing leftovers isn’t just about wasting food. Experts say it is destroying the planet. But as long as the problem is big, it’s easy to fix it.
The United States leads the world in many issues, and unfortunately food waste is one of them.
“Food discarded from the United States is equivalent to the amount of greenhouse gases produced by 37 million cars,” said Saroni Shah, a food and agriculture analyst at Auckland’s Breakthrough Institute.
Every year, Americans waste 30-40% of their food supply. According to Shah, the amount of wasted food was able to fill 730 football fields.
“If food waste is a country, it will be the third largest source of greenhouse gases in the world after the United States and China,” Shah said.
Shah explained that most of the food that is wasted is wasted at home, but also at farms, grocery stores, and restaurants.
Wherever it happened, Shah said it would become a landfill and rot.
Rotten food sends methane gas into the air. Methane is a much more powerful greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide and is far worse for global warming and the environment.
“Food waste is terrible for the climate and wastes a lot of water,” Shah said.
Food is not the only food waste. All resources spent on growth and production are also wasted.
“Throwing an apple is like pouring 25 gallons of water into a drain,” Shah said. “And the average American does it 17 times a year.”
Bay Area grocery delivery companies, called incomplete foods, sell to their customers foods that grocery stores don’t want because they don’t look good or are packaged incorrectly.
“Many people don’t know this, but grocery stores have very strict aesthetic or cosmetological standards for what they buy and what they don’t,” said Reilly Brock, Associate Creative Director at Imperfect Foods. Says.
It could be a non-symmetrical carrot or a lemon that is a few millimeters too big or too small.
“There is nothing wrong with the food,” Brock said. “It looks a little different. Ironically, if you have a garden or say that a lemon tree has grown, you’ll recognize our food because it’s similar to a farmer’s market or your own food. . Backyard garden. “
The company can deliver to about 80% of the US population. People can check if it is offered in their area by going to the company’s website.
Meanwhile, other solutions to the food waste problem recommended by the Breakthrough Institute are:
- Create a shopping list and stick to it so you don’t buy more than you eat
- Put a section in your fridge for food that gets worse quickly so you eat it first
- Freeze food to make it last longer
- Compost at home
Composting at home is like removing more than 11,000 cars from the road just by putting food waste in the trash can, rather than putting it in the trash can or trash can.
