Frank Lloyd Wright Jr. midcentury modern home for sale in CA

A mid-century modern home designed by architect Frank Lloyd Wright Jr. in Southern California’s San Gabriel foothills is on the market for $2.975 million, showcasing his famous father’s Usonian concept by using horizontal lines, ribbed concrete walls, expansive glass and dramatic roof lines.

Commonly known as Lloyd Wright, the eldest child of renowned architect Frank Lloyd Wright built the four-bedroom, four-bathroom, 3,172-square-foot residence at 1210 Journey’s End Drive in La Canada, California, in 1948, according to Sotheby’s International Realty.

Lloyd Wright explored the geometry and character of homes of the time in designing the sprawling pad, which sits on 0.68 acres.

“Surrounded by a tranquil landscape, the property exudes a sense of serenity with native plants, meandering pathways, mature trees, and a delightful water garden that attracts birds and dragonflies,” the official property listing says. “Stroll through the tranquil, parklike yard that offers ample room for a pool.”

The diagonally scored concrete patio and original built-in barbecue allow for true Southern California al fresco entertaining. Inside, the exquisitely restored home’s large windows fill rooms with natural light. The open floor plan is arranged with unique shapes and angles in what amounts to three distinct zones, according to the listing: the living space, kitchen-dining area and bedroom wing.

First, the hexagonal living room: A striking, asymmetric fireplace anchors the room and walls of glass overlook the lush garden.

Second, the kitchen: This “culinary dream” features black walnut cabinetry, stainless steel countertops, a center island and xix-burner Viking Range.

Finally, the primary bedroom suite: It’s “a sanctuary of comfort,” the listing states, equipped with a walk-through closet, an en-suite bath with dual sinks and separate tub and shower. There’s also a sitting room with a fireplace for added relaxation.

A cozy library provides an inviting built-in couch and walls lined with bookshelves provides a quiet escape.

The gem of a home has been updated, but retains historic details. A buyer can benefit from the the residence’s status under the Mills Act status, where owners of qualified properties who restore and maintain of their historic homes receive property tax relief.

Sharon Verani and Mark Ogden of Sotheby’s International Realty – Pasadena Brokerage holds the listing.
