Home Depot fire: San Jose crews continue to put out hot spots after massive weekend blaze destroys building

SAN JOSE, California (KGO) – Outbreaks continue to burn Monday following a weekend fire that destroyed a warehouse in San Jose.

The investigation into what happened is still ongoing.

In their briefing at 3:05 p.m., the San Jose Fire Department said firefighters continued to work to extinguish the blasts from debris trapped under the collapsed roof.

The fire was the community talk and almost changed lives for the people living right behind this store.

The building outside Blossom Hill Rd. was much more visible Monday morning, showing much of the store had been hit by fire and goods had been destroyed.

Some of those who live near the Home Depot are devastated by what they have seen.

“I thought we’d go check it out. The closer I got, the more I thought I didn’t want to see it,” said Oscar Sarabia. “I have lived here for so long. This was a place I keep coming back, it is gone”

Debris could still be seen in the backyards of the houses closest to the Home Depot and at least a mile away.

“Seeing how high the cloud of smoke was, I would not be surprised if it was too far, but definitely a mile away,” said Steve Nelson, who lives near the site.

The neighbors we spoke to who live just behind the Home Depot site are still working on how close they were to losing their homes.

“I looked out of my front window and saw smoke and then I went out into my front yard and I saw smoke, explosions, they were quite intense,” said Robert Candelaria.

Although he was able to stay at home, Ryshiem Henderson was able to return to his own this morning after having to spend two nights in a hotel.

“I panicked like everyone else, I mean it was right next to my yard and really looking at my fence you could really see everything,” Henderson said.

Like many of the other homeowners in this neighborhood they are still working through many different emotions.

But one emotion that stands out among all is gratitude.

“The fire brigade saved my house simply because they were spraying water on the roof and fighting the flames,” Henderson said.
