Historic El Rancho Motel in Barstow destroyed by fire – VVNG.com

BARSTOW, CA (VVNG.com) — A suspicious fire damaged most of the rooms at the historic El Rancho Motel Tuesday night in Barstow.

It happened around 9:00 p.m. on July 5, 2022, in the 100 block of West Main Street.

According to a news release, firefighters from the Barstow Fire Protection District arrived on scene to find the center section of the El Rancho Motel engulfed in flames.

Fire departments from MCLB, Ft. Irwin, Apple Valley, Victorville, San Manuel, Highland, Rialto and Fontana all responded to the scene to assist and battled the fire for about three hours before it was under control; Members of the Barstow Fire Protection District and San Bernardino County Fire are currently on the scene.

“Barstow police detectives and evidence technicians were called to the scene along with detectives from the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department’s Bomb and Arson Detail,” said Barstow Police Captain Chris Kirby. “Detectives are currently on the scene and the initial investigation reveals that the cause of the fire is suspicious in nature.”

Officials said Southern California Edison (SCE) personnel are currently on the scene trying to restore power to several businesses that lost power due to poles and wires burned in the incident.

According to a press release, “the building was previously red flagged more than a month ago due to hazardous unsafe conditions and was deemed uninhabitable.”

Main Street will still remain closed for several hours during the day, and the Barstow Police Department would like to ask residents for their cooperation in avoiding the area for their own safety and to allow their personnel to process the scene in a timely manner. .
