High gas prices might make this the costliest Memorial Day travel period ever

FRESNO, California (KFSN) – Many people are thinking twice about taking to the streets this festive weekend with gas prices soaring.

Some people like Blanca Rios feel the pain in the pump.

“You can not go anywhere,” Rios said. “I was going to Monterrey for my granddaughter, but it is very expensive. “I can not afford it.”

Andrew Ross, a spokesman for AAA, says that this weekend we will see historic numbers.

“This will probably be one of the most expensive Memorial Day trips we’ve ever seen.”

But Gross says that will not stop everyone from getting on the road.

In fact, an estimated 34.9 million people are expected to travel 50 miles or more – an increase of about 8% over last year.

Some Valley residents, such as Earl Oliver, drive south to Los Angeles for the weekend.

He says it has a huge impact on both personal and professional decisions.

“You have to make conscious decisions about whether or not you can afford to go to a movie or go out to eat because fuel is a necessity,” Oliver said.

Gas Buddy says fuel prices this weekend are the highest in a decade.

With the national average for a gallon at $ 4.60 – all-time high.

And in California, the average is over $ 6.00. A price that forced some here in the valley to find a different way to travel.

Jordan Carter says he takes the train to Southern California to see his girlfriend for the weekend.

“The trains are full,” Carter said. “They are really getting full.”

Others like Kenny Honore decided to take the train to avoid the pump altogether.

“It made more sense for me to take the train instead of paying for gas and driving,” Honore said.

Some like Freddie are turning to two-wheeled alternatives.

“I’m almost sure you know what I’m saying, getting on a bike will save you a lot of money, a lot of headaches,” Freddie said.

The AAA says Remembrance Day is a good forecast for what will follow for summer travel, which is also expected to be very busy.

The association points out that people are late for vacations and want to make up for lost time during the pandemic.
