‘Gustnado’ caught on camera by boater

Thunderstorms swept across Cincinnati, Ohio, early Saturday night, causing some winds, hail and even something that looked like a water spout. The creek was captured on camera by a boatman along the Ohio River on Saturday. According to the National Meteorological Service, they classify the water mouth as “gustnado.” A gustnado is defined as a small tornado that forms as a whirlwind in thunderstorms. They are not associated with any cloud-based rotation and are not tornadoes. Like dust devils, some stronger gusto can cause damage. NWS says this particular gustnado was not directly linked to an upstream storm. Doppler radar supports the estimate that this gustnado formed at a boundary outflow several miles before a storm. According to the NWS, many trees were damaged, some completely uprooted or uprooted and thrown into homes and power lines. Based on the images from the damage, the winds were probably 70 to 80 mph.
