The video shows three shots that appear to be VERY close to the action on the field, forcing the 7 and 8 year old players as well as coaches, umps, parents and spectators to hit the ground and sprint away in a panic.
Fortunately, according to the police, no one was injured in the incident… though WITNThe fire hit the window of a minivan parked on the field.
Despite everyone escaping physically unscathed, both teams have since pulled out of the tournament – South Durham officials say it was in the best interest of the children.
“It was a scary situation for all involved,” the team said in a statement. “In the video, the coaches boldly cover the players with their bodies and crawl off the baseball fields.”
“No child or parent should ever experience anything like this.”
The Wilson Police Department said in a statement that it is investigating the shooting, but added that at this time, “there is no evidence that this situation involved an active shooter.”
“The Wilson Police Department has no evidence at this time that anyone at the scene was intentionally targeted.”
