Gun violence discussed at Conference of Mayors attended by Jerry Dyer

FRESNO, California (KFSN) – On Friday, Vice President Kamala Harris spoke about the recent mass shootings during her speech at the 90th Annual Meeting of the US Conference of Mayors.

“No 86-year-old should be afraid to go to the grocery store for her safety,” he said. “No nine-year-old should be afraid to go to school and no 18-year-old should be able to buy a war weapon.”

Fresno Major Jerry Dyer is in Reno to attend the conference.

Dyer says that when it comes to gun violence, he believes mayors have the power to make a difference.

“Certainly, there are a lot of emotions and mixed feelings about better control of gun violence in our country, so probably not much has been done,” he said. “Mayors, we really operate as a non-partisan office. We believe we can bring a logical solution that can be adopted by both sides and by the president.”

The mayor says that while armed violence and mass shootings are topics of discussion during the conference, many other important issues are also covered.

For example, Dyer is coordinating a discussion on the use of US Rescue Plan funds, which Fresno has focused on public safety.
