The mother of a Hayward girl who was allegedly abused, kept in a shed and murdered has been charged, but the boyfriend who was also accused is still on the run.
When we found out last week that the Merced Police found the remains of an eight-year-old girl During the execution of a search warrant, the girl was only arrested a day later identified as Sophia Mason, whose Hayward family said they hadn’t seen her since December. Little Sophia’s mother, Samantha Johnson, was questioned by Merced police on March 11 about a separate child molestation charge that led to a warrant being issued for her boyfriend’s Merced home, leading to the discovery of Sophia’s remains. Johnson remains in custody, but 34-year-old boyfriend Dhante Jackson is still at large, and Merced police say, “He is known to visit the Bay Area of California.”
All of this is horrific enough, but a series of new revelations in the last two days make this heartbreaking case even more disgusting, and besides, it seems like the Alameda County Child Protection Agency has multiple opportunities to stop this.
KTVU reports that Mason’s mother, Samantha Johnson, now ccharged with murder and child abuse from the Merced County District Attorney’s Office, which is no surprise. Even more shockingly, according to the station’s reports, “Johnson told a Merced police officer that Jackson, her boyfriend, had held Sophia in a shed outside the Merced home and that the child was physically and sexually abused by Jackson.”
Fresno’s KFSN spoke to Merced police, and the details only get worse. “We found evidence to indicate that a small child lived in the shed,” Merced Police Sergeant Kalvin Haygood told the station. “In statements to Merced Police, the mother said she took her daughter out of the shed in early February and she was covered in feces.”
KRON4 iinterviewed the mother’s cousin, Melissa Harris, which provided chilling context to the phone conversation in which they learned the child was gone. “Samantha called my aunt [Sophie’s grandmother] and said, ‘I’ll come visit you today or tomorrow and this time I don’t have time [Sophia] with me. It’ll just be me and you, like it used to be, like it always should have been,” Harris told KRON4.
“That raised a red flag at my aunt’s. She said: “Where will Sophia be? What did you do to her?” Harris continued. “And finally Samantha said, ‘I’m rid of her. I was sick of them.’”
And apparently, the Alameda County Child Protective Services (CPS) has been briefed more than once on the child’s situation. A women’s shelter where Johnson was staying told authorities the child was not being provided with adequate meals, and Harris says authorities met Sophia at a park in recent months and saw clear signs of abuse.
“It was the first time she had been seen since she was kidnapped,” Harris said. “Her legs were covered in bruises and scabs. She said her mommy and her mommy’s boyfriend hit her. She said, ‘They hit me with belt buckles.'”
Samantha Johnson is being held without bail and is due to be arraigned in Merced Superior Court on March 28. Dhante Jackson is still at large.
Anyone with information regarding Jackson’s whereabouts is asked to call Merced Police Detective John Pinnegar at (209) 388-7712 and email him at [email protected]or call the anonymous hotline at 209-385-4725.
A GoFundMe campaign is in place to cover Sophie’s funeral expenses.
